Our Guidelines

To establish a safe, compassionate and constructive environment, we follow these guidelines:

1. Share the Air

No one person should monopolize group time. We each share for about three minutes, focusing on our experience, strength, and hope.

2. One Person Speaks at a Time

Each person should be allowed to speak free from distractions or side conversations.

3. What is Said Here Stays Here

This is the essential principle of confidentiality and must be respected by all.

4. Differences of Opinion are O.K.

We are all entitled to our own point of view.

5. We are All Equal

We accept cultural, linguistic, social, political and racial differences and promote their acceptance.

6. Use “I” Language

We don’t give advice. We share our own experiences and what has helped us (for example: “In my experience, I have found…”).

7. Share Safely

Avoid graphic or unsettling details, as some participants have PTSD. Instead, express your feelings in a safe and relatable way so the group can support you.

8. Medications

We don’t give medication or supplement advice, or share medication names. Please consult your doctor.

9. It’s O.K. Not to Share

People do not have to share if they do not wish to.

10. Respect for our DBSA-San Francisco Community

To ensure group runs smoothly, it may be necessary to mute a participant. Promotion of other groups is not permitted.

11. It is Everyone’s Responsibility to Make the Discussion Groups a Safe Place to Share.

We respect confidentiality, treat each other with respect and kindness, and show compassion.
